Abhyanga is the traditional self-massage with warm oil, done before a bath. Ten minutes is enough.
Choose an oil
In cool, dry weather many people like a warm sesame oil (our Vata blend). In hot weather, coconut oil feels cooler (Pitta). If you feel heavy or sluggish, a lighter mustard blend (Kapha) is traditional.
Warm it
Stand the bottle in a cup of hot water for a few minutes. The oil should feel warm, never hot.
Massage from the top
Start at the scalp, then face, ears and neck. Use long strokes on the arms and legs and circles on the joints and belly.
Rest, then bathe
Leave the oil on for 10 to 15 minutes, then bathe with warm water.
